Undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows make formative life decisions in their careers, relationships, and communities during their academic years. At the Handel Group, we believe that it is crucial for these students to have access to a powerful tool set for making their life decisions. Thus, hailing back to my roots in academia, I teach life design courses at universities and other educational organizations. I have at MIT and Stanford, and have given talks at Scripps, the NSF FORWARD to Professorship workshop, the AOE Women in Engineering conference, and the Alberta Innovates iGEM workshop.
The Handel Group has taught year-long versions of the Designing Your Life course at MIT and within the executive MBA program, the Sloan Fellows program, at the Sloan Business School for four and three years, respectively. We teach a for-credit class at the Stanford Business School, and also teach at New York University, where we both developed a class entitled Empowering Women in the Sciences, and designed a program for women science faculty that will soon debut. We have additionally taught at Rutgers Business School.
Our offerings teach participants how to build the following foundational skills:
- How to dream bigger and outside the box.
- How to approach life as an author instead of a reporter.
- How to identify excuses and justifications that hold them back.
- How to keep their word to themselves and others, a.k.a. personal integrity.
Building on these foundational skills, we next teach participants the following design skills:
- How to formulate and prove new, more empowering theories about “the way the world works.”
- How to celebrate the personality traits that work well, and evolve those that don’t.
- How to author thoughts and devote mental energy to positive pursuits.
- How to communicate with grace and honesty.
- How to identify and reauthor life patterns.
If desired, we tailor these concepts to address women in science, either as a stand-alone offering, or integrated into our workshop. If the material is integrated into the workshop, the workshop will be applicable to all students, post-doctorate associates, and faculty, but will also contain targeted information specifically for women.
Designing Your Life is a practical, step-by-step process in which participants uncover and redefine a new and powerful context from which to design and run their lives. Through conversations, self analysis, and writing exercises, each participant will design a fulfilling and impactful life vision.
